Mixing Up a Supplimental Protein Formula to Ensure Winter Weight Gain

We’ve been busy on the ranch and have been a bit behind in adding content to the website. While we’ve had good rain over the last couple weeks, I wanted to share how we ensure strong weight gain (0.6 kg/day plus) throughout the year by supplimenting high protein formula we mix on the farm with dry-season pasturing.
Our high protein mix includes molasses, salt, peanut shells and afrecho (barely and beer brewery spent grains), corn, urea and amonium sulfate.
In between grass grazing cattle are brought back to the corrals and treated to high protein mix in the afternoon.
Through local partnership we are able to use source spent brewery grains and peanut shell refuse to enhance our herd’s winter weight gain. This process sometimes called upcycling, reduces organic waste, lower input costs as well and creates strong local partnerships between the ranch and regional businesses, farmers and brewers.
